Flake News! 😳😝😧🤔☃🇨🇦📢

Hey there… How’s it snowin’, eh? 🇨🇦 It’s been snoOow long since I’ve been gone…
Nearly half a year of impromptu silence from the blog due to real life curveballs.
Yup, some heavy stuff snuffed my focus until I finally dropped the blogful ball ☹️
But through it all, I’ve learned to lean more deeply upon the LORD Jesus Christ ✝
Whatever happens… once you choose to follow Jesus, He will be your ALL and
His strength will comfort, sustain, carry and pull you through all life’s valleys ❤

By now, the Canadian geese have been squawking to and fro for weeks.
And after this week’s snow, I’m sure they’ll instinctively fly south soon
.
Time truly flies, whether or not anyone’s having fun! But how can it be
mid-September with our first snow-scape already over and done?!? 😮
Last time we saw September snow was 2014, making our wild weather
all the more normal—here at the 53rd N parallel on the Alberta prairies.

SnoOowww… hope your weather’s treating you well 😎
Fun to catch these snowful pics while they lasted, but sure
hope our summer’s still got some high temps in the tank!
Well at least it roused me from blogful hibernation, right? 😉
❤

#65 💜 summer solstice… new day dawning

Hello & Welcome to my 65th episode of the KWH iPad Show! Today’s feature is the thrill of dawn after hours of late-night summer solstice knitting ’til the crack of yawn 🙂

Keeping up with the solstice sunrise can be a challenge… Especially here at the 53rd parallel N on the Canadian prairies—where summer days and winter nights grow extra long. Well okay… winter sunrises/sunsets are easy-peasy. So every year since moving here, it’s the thrill of catching a pixelated first glimpse at summer’s dawning 17-hour solstice “magic” that rises up within my night-owl-ishly inclined inner-knitter’s heart ❤

Summer Solstice 2017…
sunrise 5:06 am ❤ sunset 10:06 pm

Then last night… errr… 3:30 this morning… uhhhm… actually yesterday morning, since gently “coaxing” this post into shape has taken so long… sighhh :-/

Anyhoo… it finally dawned on me!

#63 💜 a very special day in May

Hello & Welcome to my 63rd episode of the KWH iPad Show! Today’s feature is my dear, sweet husband’s birthday—on this 5th “Cinco de Mayo” day in the 5th month of May ❤

Well it took a few tries, but our snow is finally ALL melted—again, for the 3rd time this season!!! Our trees are barely budding. Red-Winged Blackbirds have returned for another season of sweet summertime tweets. Plus… mid-to-high 20’s ºC temperatures (far preferred over the frozen fluff delivered the morning of my birthday) have bloomed just in time to celebrate hubby’s summer luvin’ personality ❤

Ohhh it’s SO good to finally throw back the flannel, open up the windows, uncover the patio furniture and go outdoors to enjoy everything from breakfast to dinner, yard work and all things crafty!

Our first (pic-less) patio picnic of 2017 was a menu of pork chops with roasted carrots and potatoes ❤ Today’s photo feast of mouth-waterMELONing roll kuchen (recipe posted here) was actually our last patio picnic from late-August 2016. Yup… that’s how long it’s been since our weather’s felt palatable for outdoor dining :-/ And yes, I do like playin’ with my food… gotta ❤ bits of hearty foodish-ness on a plate… LoL 😉 🙂

Hello & Welcome to my 60th episode of the KWH iPad Show! Today’s feature is the beauty of our (now melted) March snow-scape 🙂

March was (as always) a wild month of snow, blue skies and beautiful days. It had us dressing for everything from ferocious cold to summery shorts/T-shirt weather. Yup… shorts in March, here at the 53rd parallel N on the Canadian prairies! ❤ It entered like a lamb and inspired me to clown around 😉 But then (from March 7-9), it roared like a lion and raised our snowbanks to waist-height :-/ By month’s end, the snow was pretty well all melted and March felt like a warm ‘n fuzzy lamb… LoL … and that’s sNOw April Fools joke! 😉

Sure luvin’ this early start to another season of spun in the sun! Literally a breath of fresh air for outdoor knitting, spinning, reading, lunching and yard-work activities! Plus, now that winter’s over and spring’s been sprung, I’m snoOow glad to have paused for pics before all the melting was done!

Hello & Welcome to my 58th episode of the KWH iPad Show! Today’s feature is a snowy bit of fibrous fun 😍

Oh how I love to watch snow melt—especially after being surrounded by it since November. Friday’s mild temperatures melted a lot of snow, so I grabbed a few colourful props and ran outside to enjoy the show! Yup… gotta ❤ a good ol’ fibrously fun backyard yarn-bombing photo shoot 🙂 Later that night, a storm blew into town and re-blanketed us in several inches of white :-/ But oh well, it was fun while it lasted…

The golfing clown is a Jean Greenhow design. This half-knitted WIP of mine has been cooped up in the back of my yarn closet for … gulp … years! Really wanna/oughta/gotta get around to finishing that guy! Fun to take him out to play in the snow, though! 😉 Want to try this at home? #56 💜 ‘Twas the weekend before Christmas…

Flight Knits Carry-On WIP #2

Hello & Welcome to my 56th episode of the KWH iPad Show! Today’s feature is my knitterly version of Clement Clarke Moore’s “Twas the night before Christmas” poem—inspired by my sack of incomplete Christmas decorations, as I race to finish in time for the 25th! 🙂

‘Twas the weekend before Christmas,
when all through the house…
Not a project was finished,
not even a gift knit for my spouse!

The incomplete stitches were
layed by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas’
elf-help team soon would be there…

My needles were nestled
all snug in their yarn webs,
While visions of sweet FO’s
danced in my head.

And hubby in his sports jersey,
and I with my knitting lap,
Had just settled in for a long evening
of Hockey Night in Canada on tap.

Then away with my pics to the
web’s window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the iPad and threw
open the photo editing app,

And sprang to my blog,
to WordPress gave a whistle,
And away the pics flew
like the down of a thistle.

And I whistled, and shouted,
and called them by name…

Now Dasher! now Dancer!
now Prancer and Vixen!
On Comet! On Cupid!
on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the blog!
there’s no time to crawl!
Now dash away!
Dash away! Dash away all!

the KWH iPad Show logo

Hello & Welcome to my 55th episode of the KWH iPad Show! Today’s feature is our recent snowfall 🙂

Ooooh… the snowy night & day scene outside our front door looks divine! Fresh flakes are just snooow pretty, aren’t they? And especially the first snowfall of fresh flakes! That’s why my trusty iPad & I always try to pixelate ’em asap upon arrival 🙂

These photos are actually our second snowfall of the season! The first was early October, way back when the trees still had all their green leaves!!! Much earlier than I’d have liked, albeit quite a pretty sight! I’m still in the process of processing all those photos. Posting these first will knock my flakes out of blogful order, but that’s snOw’kay 😉

Now nearing the end of November with a month ’til Christmas, it’s great to have snow! Snow helps get ya into the Christmas spirit and helps get my nimble Christmas knitting fingers into gear! 🙂

Hope it’s snowing well wherever you are! 😉

#53 💜 morbid moment with a soft touch

RIP li'l baby weasel

the KWH iPad Show logo

falling leaves October 30th, 2016

budding leaves May 2nd, 2016

Hello & Welcome to my 53rd episode of the KWH iPad Show! Today’s feature is a ghoulish true tale from half a year ago, when I stumbled upon the frightful sight of a wee baby weasel…
😮😨😱

Ah yes… I remember that morbid moment like it was only yesterday. The startling moment that caused me to scream at the sight of a dead (or was it still alive?!?) rodent’s body, right there on our backyard patio!!! … Well, perhaps it was less of a scream and more like a squeal or shriek?? Hmmm… nothing full throttle or shrill, mind you… Probably something as simple as “eeek!!!” with a bit of a jump… Yeah, that’s it… a startled jump! Or would that be jump startle?? Well anyway…

it was a lovely, warm and sunny afternoon in early May. The lawn and foliage was rising from winter dormancy. The flowers had not yet begun to bloom. Then suddenly, the piercing sound (which can scarcely be described as silence) of startled verbalism emitted from me…

A crowd of witnesses flocked to the scene… Well okay, our nearly 10-year old next-door neighbour and her friend happened to be passing by. Thankfully, and without a moment’s hesitation, the fearless young girls ran to my rescue! Upon closer examination, the tiny creature was found to be laying in a pool of its own blood. We pronounced the rodent dead at the scene. Prior to proper burial, we proceeded to respectfully photograph the unfortunate li’l guy—for the sake of its 15 minutes of fame via the blog.

Thanks to this photographic evidence, the victim has now been identified as a baby weasel. Yup… with an empty field out back and community pond around the corner, wildlife sightings are just part of the environment. So who knows what some other neighbour’s cat might drag into our yard next?!? :-/

Special thanks to Madison and Sarah, for their assistance throughout this investigation!

#50 💜 the blog days of summer

the KWH iPad Show logo

the blog days of summer_8the blog days of summer animated GIFhttps://knittingwithheart.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/image6.jpeg

Hello & Welcome to my 50th episode of the KWH iPad Show! Today’s feature is my latest crazy-hair-brained technique for beating the blogful summertime heat 🙂

Well here we are, mid-way through August and the sounds of Canadian Geese are becomng more frequent—signalling the beginning of the end to our favourite season :-/ All in all, it’s been a good summer. The snow melted extra-early 🙂 Then it rained more often than not 😦 And now, I’ve finally discovered the secret to my future outdoor summer blogging success!

The iPad makes it easy to bring blogging outdoors, of course. But gosh-yarn-it… that glass screen reflects EVERYthing!!! And that makes reading and/or snapping pics in the sunshine quite difficult—especially for me, being visually impaired due to RP :-/

Hopefully someday, Apple will find a way to fix that glaring issue. Until then, I’ve taken drastic draping measures into my own hands and pulled the non-wool sheet over my head and iPad… LoL… ’cause y’know… 1-2 of our neighbours might not yet think I’m cuckoo 😉 But hey… not so nuts, since I got to edit all these photos AND enjoy an afternoon of fresh air 🙂 Plus now, I won’t need to choose between catching up with all my favourite blogs or enjoying the sunshine!  ❤

Do try this at home…
I highly recommend it!

So here in my photos… I’m all set for a blogfully constructive day in the sunshine with my iPad, charger/extension cord, earphones, fitted cotton sheet (elastic around the back of the head helps hold it in place if/when the wind blows) and water-filled hazelnut coffee creamer container—for a sprinkling sip o’ fun in the sun 🙂

Special thanks to Ralph at Bluefish Way, for his clear how-to instruction post filled with ideas to create your own animated GIF-packs 🙂 This first animated .gif of mine was really easy… I may need to make more!

Hello & Welcome to my 46th episode of the KWH iPad Show! Today’s feature is my eye on the sky 🙂

We’re off on another 14-hour road trip adventure to Manitoba for a nephew’s wedding/family visit and HPP doctor’s appt. En route somewhere under the Saskatchewan sky, I glanced up from my knitting and grabbed the iPad to capture what looked to me like a heart in the clouds! Everyone else seems to see something different in this photo, though …LoL… So, what do yOu see?

Then back in the backyard at “party central” where all the family’s been gathering from Ontario, BC, Saskatchewan and Alberta—rays of afternoon sunshine offered some brilliant shadowy effects as preview to another golden prairie sunset ❤

Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone!

stitch markers and crochet snowflakes from Angela

me at the Apple Store

Well here we are, one week past Christmas and finally posting my decorated staircase … LoL … Honestly, some people really ought to get their Christmas knitting act together and start stitching as soon as the stores start their seasonal displays!!! Ah well, it’s all fun and I’m not feeling a bit foolish for posting ’em late 😉 Far better to be squeeking-in with this post before the stroke of New Year’s, than suffer the hang-over of waiting ’til next year!

Anyhoo…

This year’s Christmas staircase theme colours include: red, green and white with spindles wrapped in icy blue eyelash yarn. The tree is one ball each of fleece/eyelash yarn. The large heart on the tree is red eyelash yarn…. Gotta say, I ❤ that eyelash yarn! These were part of my birthday yarn stash purchase from Herrschners. The candles are red crochet (wedding gift) doilies, with flames knit of fancy-fluffy-puffy golden yarn from a friend. The various garlands are knit from Bernat Boa, Lily Crafter’s Cotton (discontinued) and Bernat Christmas Tinsel worsted cotton… Ooooh, plus one furry strip of Baby Monkey ultra-soft yarn… Adorning tree ornaments include: 1 green wool Heartfelted Bramble♥tini Loop Ornament + 2 red/white fleece Sweetie♥Knit♥Hearts + 5 green wool Hearty Links with Felted Loops + 2 i-Cord candy canes. The tree topper ribbon is from an embellished Ferrero Rocher gift pack. That white loopy thing below the ribbon is just me playing with plarn (plastic yarn)—spun on my drop spindle.

And finally… the lovely crochet snowflakes and charmed stitch markers (also pictured separately from last year’s post) were gifted to me last Christmas from Angela aka “Wish I Were Stitching” WP blog… Thanks again, Angela ❤

Then today, technically ending the year off right, we popped into our nearest Apple Store and bought a much needed flash drive… It’s charging now! And am I ever looking forward to unloading my overstuffed iPad of nearly 9 months worth of blogging photos!!!

Merry Christmas Morning,

For the past couple of years—see Christmas Day 2013 & 2014—I’ve been decorating our staircase (in lieu of the Christmas tree we don’t have), then posting photos of my festive yarn bombing decor to the blog on Christmas Day 🙂

That tradition continues this year, although it is running a bit late… :-/ I’ll have photos for my next blog post!

Ah well, inspiration can sometimes take time… while the calendar waits for no one. Add to that my “procraftinator” tendencies and you get yarnful knotty-ness that will soon be nice 🙂

Hello & Welcome
to my 30th episode of the
KWH iPad Show!

Today’s feature is the season’s first snowfall…
as seen through the eye of my iPad 🙂

iMac at first snowNovemberSnow-back<br />

Hey there…
We’ve got snow!

Yup…
It’s that snowy time of the year once again, here at the 53rd parallel north on the Canadian prairies. And awe shucks, I haven’t even blogged about my summer or autumn photos… yet!

This year’s first foot of flakey blanketing white fluff arrived Monday morning and continued to fall hard for us until Tuesday afternoon. It’s our first real snowfall since “snow angel” neighbour Randy moved away. And while my husband’s HPP medication is definitely showing signs of healing ((( yay, God heard and is answering our prayers!!! ))) he’s still on crutches. So, this 2015/16 season of snow shovelling is in my hands, which is totally okay. After these past few years of not having to shovel, my nimble knitting muscles are about due for a workout anyway 😉

The first snowfall is always the prettiest. Yet these (now less than 8 hours) short days leading up to winter solstice can be a challenge, when trying to capture glimmers of glistening fresh snowy magic. And so, my trusty iPad and I have been keeping one eye on the sky and a finger on the camera trigger!

Forecasters have predicted we’ll have another winter like last year… And that sounds good to me, since last year was mild! Whatever the case, I’m sure the snow will stick around until mid-to-late April—just like it always does :-/ 🙂 ❤

This weekend is
“Thanksgiving” in Canada!

One day of thanks is good…
One 3-day long-weekend is grand…
But with millions of moments and
cherished memories along life’s way…
I’d say the calendar overflows with
an abundance of joy to fill our hearts
with thankfulness on ANY given day!
This is true, even on a “bad” day!
Wouldn’t you say?
Now looking at this photo of my ol’ iMac
that died 6 months ago, I’m ever-thankful
for my iPad that has kept me blogging
all these months—
just you, me & my iPad

So this year…

I’m thankful for my husband’s precious prescription of HPP medicine and the doctors/researchers who worked all these years to give us hope for a healthier tomorrow! Plus, so thankful we could visit family en route to picking up the first month’s prescription! 🙂 ❤
&
I’m thankful to live in a peaceful nation where individual rights for freedom of speech, politics and religion are valued, respected and encouraged!
&
I’m thankful for unobstructed
sunset views from our own backyard!
&
I’m thankful for YOU ❤
This blog would be a lonely cyber-place

the KWH iPad Show #23 💜 healing hope for HPP

Asfotase Alf

frowning Mac computer

.
Hello & Welcome
to my 23rd episode of the
KWH iPad Show!

Today’s feature is our road trip to Winnipeg
… in pursuit of a healthier tomorrow 🙂

.

Asfotase Alf

And we’re back! … Back home, after our whirlwind road trip to Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre—where we finally met Dr. Cheryl Rockman-Greenberg in person and received our first month’s prescription of Asfotase Alfa!!! Dr. Greenberg is the renowned driving force behind clinical trial research for hypophosphatasia (HPP). Over the past decade, other doctors have allowed Husband’s paperwork for obtaining HPP treatment to fall short. But that all changed when we found Dr. Greenburg and Dr. Christopher Lee (our personal physician). We thank God for enabling them and blessing us with their dedicated effort to help make this medical mission trip possible! ❤

As well… I’m back to feeling like my usual self—after suddenly feeling mysteriously “zapped” of all energy for the past 5 days. Weird :-/ Dragging myself around and feeding my facebook page was about all the strength I could muster. At least the facebooking was fun… So it’s sure great to be back—in more ways than one!

Here are a few iPad photos of memorable moments and prairie highway scenery from our trip…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Proverbs 16:9

We set out before sunrise in our 2002 Toyota Celica—which still runs bright like its sunshiny paint colour 🙂 After driving 10 hours, we stopped for night at the Yorkton Days Inn in Saskatchewan. During 2 days of medical testing in Winnipeg, we stayed in an east-facing Canad Inns room (see 13th floor sunrise photo), conveniently attached to the hospital. We also got together with family and celebrated one nephew’s 13th birthday! The last time we saw family was last summer’s trip to the Niagara Peninsula. The time before that was our Thanksgiving 2013 road trip… Fun stuff! And finally, an especially yummy thanks to our sisters, for filling our bags with their homemade goodness of cherry jam, spaghetti sauce, salsa and cookies… Plus, one perfectly purple cupcake-shaped handmade soap! 🙂 ❤

Homeward bound, we drove straight through for 14-hours—eager to refrigerate our precious HPP-fighting Asfotase Alfa cargo… Now we’ll wait and see how long it might be before Husband’s daily needle dosage shows signs of healing 🙂

Leave a comment, if you’d care to share your insight 🙂

yarn and daylily gardenyarn and daylily gardenAugust in Canada begins with a long-weekend 🙂 And this long-weekend’s nocturnal rains have allowed for sunny/blue skies with puffy/white clouds floating freely in the breeze. Plus, our neighbour got the weekend off to a great start by surprising me with a bagful of mystery yarn—which automatically makes any weekendwatermelon & roll kuchen a great weekend! You can see it there in the daylily garden 😉 The labels are missing, but I’d say it’s a few balls of cotton and maybe some wool? I’ll need to test how it felts.

And although summer might be half over, it’s just not summer until you’ve had at least one healthy serving of watermelon & roll kuchen 🙂 Last year at this time, we were visiting family/friends in Southern Ontario. The weather there was picnic-perfect. So to their backyard we went—with a platter of sliced watermelon and fresh batch of my mom-in-law’s puffy roll kuchen love ❤ It was a sizzling hot summer day. And this was a simple yet scrumptious Mennonite-style family feast!

There are many versions for the Mennonite Roll Kuchen recipe. Basically, it’s just fat-fried, fritter-like puffs of dough that melt in your mouth and taste as light as a cloud—fattening storm clouds, if eaten too often :-/ For a small batch, we (and by “we” I’m referring to chef hubby who does the cooking because he’s the one who adds a dash of “love” to every dish) use the following recipe.

Oh, and that patch of blue in the watermelon & roll kuchen photo is the sky’s reflection shining through—sink-side upon the kitchen counter 🙂
.

Roll Kuchen recipe

1/4 c whipping cream
1 Tbs sour cream
1 egg, beaten
2 Tbs butter, melted
1 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder

Beat egg. Add cream and remaining ingredients. Mix well. Roll flat and cut into rectangles with a slit in the middle of each piece. Fry in deep hot fat until golden brown. Serve with watermelon!

the KWH iPad Show #12 💜 Lily for a Day

Hello & Welcome
to my 12th episode of the
KWH iPad Show!

Today’s feature is the first daylily bloom
from our front yard garden bouquet 🙂

pink daylily

Hey everyone! … Meet our first daylily of the year 🙂 Isn’t she lovely? Today’s photos are technically the season’s third bloom (all pink). But with a name like daylily… well… Who’s counting anyway, right?!?

We have three daylily plants in our front garden—pink, peach and purple. At least that’s how I remember it, since it’s been a while and all my daylily photos from last year are currently stuck (hopefully safely stuck) on my iMac-less hard drive :-/ I’d hoped to post photos of those, but didn’t make it in time before my iMac quit. Last year’s first daylily blooms were peach and are posted here. Wow… this year’s garden is way ahead of last year! Perhaps next year will be ripe for the purple plant to bloom first? Let’s get together here again next summer to find out! 🙂

Anyway, there’s something festive about the first flowers of the season! Now at the risk of boring you, please indulge me whilst I “make like a squirrel” and pack my knitting blog with a few flowering summer photos—in preparation for the flowerless months ahead 🙂

the KWH iPad Show #11 💜 summer solstice sunset

Hello & Welcome
to my 11th episode of the
KWH iPad Show!

Today’s feature is our summer solstice sunset …
sunrise 5:06 am 🙂 sunset 10:06 pm
… missin’ my iMac, but luvin’ the 17-hour days!

blog post 🙂

My favourite thing about living this far north is summer solstice and the extra-long days that go with it! That “other” solstice will have us on the flip side soon enough… But these days, especially with the above seasonal temperatures we’ve been having, it’s just so GOOD to enjoy being outside watching glowing skies finally dim around 11 pm 🙂 That’s my idea of a summertime thrill!

Catching a glimpse of the summer solstice sunrise, on the other hand, is more rare… I’ll sometimes manage to wake up in time to see the sky already beginning to brighten by 4:00 am. But then I lay down for a moment, whilst the sun rises to the peak of our neighbour’s roof… And awe shucks, the moment passes me by again! :-/

Last year’s summer solstice was extra great, for me. That’s when my iMac finally got resuscitated, after a month and a half on the fritz 🙂  Now again, since directly following this post in early April of this year, my iMac has been gone for good :-/ But the blog must go on! And my trusty iPad has been a real lifesaver for that!!!

Thanks for joining me in my iPad-photo solstice celebration of God’s glorious sun setting skies on the longest day of the year. How did you enjoy your summer solstice?

Our weather forecast—fahrenheit or celcius—for the
first week of summer is looking mighty fine 😀
Wish you were here!

See how the video is panned to the far left? That’s where our winter solstice
sun shall set 6 months from now—between the last 2 clumps of taller trees.

the KWH iPad Show #8 💜 buzzing blossoms & lilacs & leafy sunsets… Oh May!

Hello & Welcome
to my 8th episode of the
KWH iPad Show!

Today’s feature is abuzz with leafy sunsets
and the season’s first garden bouquet 🙂

.

budding mid-May sunset

Now that it’s June, I thought it might be fun to post a few floral foliage photos/video (captured, edited and watermarked via my iPad) of our garden bouquet from the last half of May 🙂

May felt warm like actual summer, yet the trees in our yard were as bare as Old Mother Hubbard’s cupboard! :-/ The first week of May brought showers of snow. But then it barely sprinkled, until finally raining last week. Yup, and our trees were leafless so long that I actually dressed then in yarn … LoL … Spring fever, anyone?!? Ah well, it seemed like a woolerful idea at the time 😉

Oh, but now see how our garden has grown! First came the leaves, followed by the bees. Bees all abuzz with the pollination of blooming bushes and apple/lilac blossoming trees! It’s all quite aromatic—if you don’t look at the weeds! 😛 And still daylight grows, for another couple of pre-solstice weeks 😀

.

Whewww… that’s a giant photo gallery! It took forever to process via my iPad, but I think I’m getting faster at it and learning lots… Apparently, this is what happens when you don’t get to see petals or leaves for half the year! :-/ Yup, and in another 5-6 months (when that “other” season roars back into town) this pictorial labour of love post will be my mind’s momentary getaway… savouring the scent, sight and bee buzzing sounds of a blossoming summer 🙂
