STITCH TECH ♥ the B&T method of stitch security
Quick question… What do you call that drawstring-like technique so commonly used for fastening off without having to actually bind off stitches? Do you know the one I’m talking about? It’s that stitch-gathering thing we do for hats, gloves, toys, hearts and more…
But what is the name of it?
Hmmm…
Does it even have a name?!?

Yes actually, it does. For some reason, though, this simple method of stitch security is rarely referred to by name. But why is that? And what’s in a name, anyway?!?
Well several years ago, I discovered Jean Greenhowe‘s whimsical knitting pattern world of clowns and dolls. That’s when I first read instructions for the B&T. Yup! And to this day, as far as I can tell, she is the only one who calls the B&T by name. Perhaps now you will join us? 😉
B&T stands for
“break & thread through”
and/or “bind & tighten”

I absolutely love Jean Greenhowe’s knitting booklets. Her softies patterns are adorable. They’re very difficult to find outside the US. Last year I was lucky enough to find 4 of these booklets in a vintage shop for a bargain!!! I couldn’t believe it!!!

Ooooh good for you! Which booklets? Have you knit any yet? I have her Red Nose Gang & Golfing Clown & Christmas Special & Traditional Favourites 🙂 The golfing & one other clown have been in a WIP state for too long… I really ought to finish those! 😉 ♥ ❤

It took me a while to answer because I had to check eheh I have the dolls and teddys, the hedgehogs, llittle gift dolls and the topsy-turnabout dolls. I made a typo there and almost called them tipsy dolls ahahah! I still haven’t dared to make any but it’s definitely in my bucket list and I’ll be sure to show them to the world! 😉

LoL … I’ve made the teddy bear a few times and a couple of clowns, all given as gifts. Oh, and her humpty-dumpty—one gifted, another for my inner-child 😉 Someday I’ll get around to making a topsy-tipsy doll, too. Fun knits! 🙂 ♥ ❤

At the Human Computer Interaction Symposium this year, I heard a great talk about the women who “knitted” the circuit boards of the early computers in the space program. It may take some time to find the reference.
