spring feverishness

We’re home from Southern California, where we enjoyed a break from the snow! And just like it says in all the brochures, San Diego was sunny and warm… for the first day anyway. Perhaps you saw the palm tree photo posted on my Knitting With Heart facebook page? Those sunshiny pixels were captured upon our checking-in at the Hotel Hilton San Diego/Del Mar. That’s the spot, right next to the hotel’s courtyard fire pit, where we spent the afternoon and ate dinner! It was sure nice to relax like that, especially since we’d left our house at 4:00 AM 🙂

Then it rained the next day.

The airport taxi driver was the first to mention rain in the forecast. Apparently, it had not rained much for about a year, So of course we were (tried to be) happy for their sake. And sure enough, the rain came… and kept coming until after we left 😦 Oh well, ‘guess we’ll need to sharpen our “happy dance” steps so as not to summon the rain clouds during future celebratory capers 😉

Seriously though, we were just happy to be there. We were attending the Soft Bones educational meeting for hypophosphatasia (HPP) on “Rare Disease Day” (February 28th) in San Diego. My husband has this ultra-rare, debilitating and possibly fatal metabolic bone disease for which there is no cure. This trip was an opportunity for us to connect with others who have HPP and/or researchers working to find a cure for HPP. Indeed, it was exciting to meet with others who have been living with the same disease-related difficulties that we’ve been burdened with. More exciting, was to hear news that research has advanced far enough to make a real difference in the lives of children who are born with HPP. Our continuing hope and prayer is that the unprecedented advances in research will accelerate until an adult-appropriate cure is discovered! Thanks for hoping and praying with us!

En route home, at the San Diego airport, we stopped in at the duty-free shop and met a lovely Chanel cosmetics rep named Belen. We had rushed to the airport that morning, and I had not given much effort to how I looked… So of course, that’s when you meet up with someone who will analyze your make-up … lol … But she was very sweet. And so there we were, standing in the store while she applied my make-up. I mentioned how I’d like to include her in this blog post about our trip and got her business card. Well, do you know what? Belen is Belen Sanchez of Biblia Fashion… one very talented fashion designer and professional make-up artist, that’s all! Wow… I love that!

Then it was time for us to fly back home. My aircraft craft of choice for this trip was to finger-knit a few balls of newspaper yarn, which I’d spun beforehand. Have you tried finger knitting? It makes a great carry-on project! Intriguing for some onlookers too. The retired university professor seated next to me called it “ingenious”  🙂

Finally, after a 7 hour (SEVEN hour) stopover in Calgary (Calgary is approximately 3 hours by car or half an hour in the air from home) we arrived to our door at 1:00 AM. The rather nippy night air welcomed us at -31°C feels like -43°C (-24°F feels like -46°F). Those temperatures, by the way, didn’t budge much until just a few days ago… brrrrrrrrr!!! But NOW… our entire forecast is positively above normal and feels like spring!!! 🙂

It also feels like that nasty influenza, which took me by storm 3 days prior to flying south is finally nearly done for good. It had all but vanished throughout our San Diego stay (and seemed like the fastest recovery in history!). But then wouldn’t you know it… the closer we got to home? the sicker I got! So for the past week, I’ve been dragging myself around, breaking a sweat trying to do the tiniest tasks and basically living in the daze of influenza. But those days are now (hopefully) over! I rarely if ever get sick, but do believe that the tub of honey with cinnamon home remedy I was medicating with really helped me spring forward and get back to good health 🙂

Thanks for sharing about HPP! It’s something we rarely talk about, but is important if we want to advocate for awareness and progress!! (You can use that in a future blog if you like 🙂 )

  3. Sounds like you had fun even though………. Great to share the info as most of us never even think of how a disease can affect one’s life in such dramatic fashion. I have never tried finger knitting, but do want to try it. We had 2 lovely 51 degree days and then Storm Vulcan hit. It wasn’t as bad as some thought it would be, but one day was being outside doing yard clean-up and grandson riding his car on the driveway in the warm sun for over 2 hours and then such a winter storm to watch with white-outs and wind blowing beautiful fluffy white and beautifully coating trees and houses. LOL We have learned to take it in our stride as the seasons change and be prepared for anything, winter coat and boots one day and light jacket and sweatshirt on hand the next. The thought just hit me as maybe we are lucky as we don’t even have to travel to experience such weather changes in a season. Oh well, such is life. So glad you are feeling better. That flu is wicked this year and hangs on for weeks weakening a person. I am eager to bake in the sun!!!

    • Thanks Carol 🙂 Yep, that flu does have a wicked grip… not quite but almost 100% back to feeling like my old self 🙂 As well, opening our eyes/ears/minds/hearts toward becoming more aware of and compassion of the difficulties in each individual life is important, since our own lives are surrounded by individual lives.
And goodness yes! … can hardly wait to get back to baking in the sun! It’s nice to finally get a few signs that winter is weakening. Our forecast says it’ll be a messy weekend, though, so we’re not done yet… ❤

      • Freaky spring!!! lol Yesterday wind chill at 1 degree, can’t remember exact temp and only wind chill. Today 51 degrees and no wind chill and sunny. We were out for maybe over an hour with Kian riding his car around the driveway as by afternoon all snow and ice had melted off of it. Snow still in the yards though and tomorrow about 21 degrees and cold all week in the forecast. Can’t pack much away anymore in any season change as we never know for sure. Beginning a cardigan with recycled cotton yarn and trying to have it finished for summer, but we will see. Only have 4 skeins so went down a size and if it doesn’t fit I will send to grand daughter or daughter if it might fit them. I want to try the pattern and if it is nice will make another one. It might be an easy one to change up a bit for variety.. A short sleeved no button one that looks quick and easy. I have never done a sweater with cotton yarn. Very light to knit with and easy on the rotator cuff. lol

    • So good to hear that you and Kian could get out there to enjoy some mild weather 🙂 Keep it coming, right?! And oh boy, sure hope you have enough yarn for that sweater and that it fits! Around here, spring can bring absolutely ANYthing… So far, March came in like a ferocious lion and we’re hoping it’ll go out (and stay out) like a lamb. Our jackets are getting lighter and a lot of snow has melted. We can see the good earth poking through 🙂 though there’s still plenty to go :-/

  5. Thanks for sharing Jackie. I had never heard of HPP so I am really glad you mentioned it. I will pray for wise doctors to find help for those afflicted. And prayers for loved ones like you, too. I am glad you are on the mend! These temperatures! You would think the cold would kill off any virus around.. not so. We are freezing again tonight.. Snow is almost melted though! I am seeing grass… not pretty green grass, mind you. But at least it is something! And I noticed daffodils peeking out! Wow.. they were buried in snow until yesterday! Take care of yourself! Glad you are back! 🙂

    • Thanks for your well wishes and for praying with/for us, Sandy 🙂 Life with an incurable, ultra-rare disease is not the stuff of carefree living, for sure. But science is working to find a cure, and God will continue helping us until then!
And it certainly would be nice if the sub-zero temps would kill off all the viruses… and those pesky mosquitos too!!! So good to hear that your snow is melting 🙂 Much of our snow has melted, but there’s still much more to go. It’s encouraging to see our not-so-pretty grass is starting to poke its way through 🙂 but the daffodils will be a while yet… sigh ❤

An interesting account of your trip! Having lived in Socal for years, it’s hard to imagine you type of super freezing weather in Canada! Maybe you should come to Calif. more often if in deed you bring some rain!

Sorry to hear about your husband. It must present some real challenges in life for the both of you! I like the idea of your finger knitting, especially on a long airline flight!

Thanks for your support at my blog, and have a great weekend!

    • Yes indeed, finger knitting is the way to craft ‘n fly… no knitting needles/tools for airport security to confiscate! We’d love to visit California again! Could’ve brought a bunch of rain barrels from this past week 😉 We’re 5.5 hrs N of the Canada/USA border, so imagining winter without snow/cold can be difficult :-/ Hubby grew up near Niagara Falls, though—which is on latitude with northern California and not nearly so ferocious 🙂
Thanks so much for your blogful support, Steve ❤ I appreciate your digging so deep to find this post! Fortunately, there's been recent progress for hubby's HPP, which I posted @ http://wp.me/p2d4xd-2tw
Hope you're enjoying great weather for your Memorial Day long-weekend! 🙂 ♥ ❤

      • The True Light!

I hadn’t thought of the fact that airport security would take away standard knitting needles! You can’t even bring bottled water along, so anything like needles, certain knives, box cutters, etc. would be out!

You are welcome for the support. I try to read those who visit and read my blog. I have to dig through the archives on a few of my “fellow bloggers” to find posts…

It must be hard to write and knit at the same time…hehe! Enjoy your weekend!

        Steve 🙂

        • heehee… Yup, usually one or the other when it comes to knitting ‘n writing. But I like how the iPad can read posts to me whilst I knit! 🙂 We went to Cancun once. Airport staff all said it was okay to bring my knitting onboard… All but the last check-point—where they were seriously going to confiscate my needles!!! So, we had to run back to the beginning and check them with our carry-on… yikes!!!
Blog “likes” can overwhelm quickly on the iPad… So I’ve started keeping a list. It’s still slower than when I had the iMac. But this way, I do eventually get around to visiting everyone 🙂 ♥ ❤

Wow, close call on the needles in Cancun! That’s neat that your ipad reads the posts to you. Wish I could get my laptop to do that…

Anyway, have a good weekend and we’ll talk again next week, Lord willing.

            • Yup, the Cancun airport had my knitting on pins ‘n needles!!! My husband does have a pc laptop. But we haven’t found any way (yet) to make it read highlighted text like Apple products do… So, not so helpful that way and I rarely use it :-/
Hope the week is going well for you so far, talk to you later 🙂 ♥ ❤

Well, thank goodness you passed the security in Cancun with the needles in your possession!

I have two doctor appts. this week so I hope all goes well with each one. Thanks for the well wishes and we will talk later.

And yes, I'm very thankful to have returned with all my needles intact… Won't likely ever try bringing my knitting onboard another aircraft, though :-/ ♥ ❤

Well, to use an old cliche, we “live and learn”…hopefully! Thank you for the well wishes. I’m afraid, however, that so far, the news isn’t good. It seems that it not just the vertebrae are narrowing, but my options are as well!

I may just have to do my best to live with things…
