how to make Sweetie♥KNIT♥Heart Valentine Rings

What does the NFL Super Bowl XLVIII…
the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia…
and Valentine’s Day have in common?

They all have rings and they’re all coming up on the calendar!

.

Sunday February 2nd (aka “groundhog day“… can you beLIEVE it’s already February?!?) is Super Bowl XLVIII, with Seattle Seahawks vs Denver Broncos. My husband is a huge sports fan, so he’ll definitely be watching. And me? My plan as usual, having knit my way through several years of televised sports since marrying that wonderful man, is to “watch” the game with him! 😉 My goal is to finish up some samples for my upcoming set of heart-shaped knitting patterns! How about you? Are you ready for some football? Do you have any particular knitting project planned for your “super bowl party” sports/knitting event? Did you know that whoever wins the Super Bowl will get a ring? But there’s no reason why NFL football players should be the only ones to sport a little bling, right?!? Here’s how you can make some Sweetie♥Heart ring/bracelet “bling” of your own! 🙂

To begin, you’ll need to download my Sweetie♥KNIT♥Heart FREE knitting pattern. Click HERE to find the original post. It is also available via Craftsy and Ravelry. Along with the pattern, you’ll need small amounts of feltable wool yarn and appropriately sized knitting needles. Details for yarn/needles I used in making my sample ring/bracelet sets pictured above are as follows:

Patons Classic Worsted 100% Virgin Wool, 3-ply (PURPLISH-RED #209)
Herrschners Worsted 100% New Wool, 3-ply (DEEP PURPLE)
— Herrschners Worsted 100% New Wool also pictured with gloves (LAVENDER) —

RING:
US size 3 / 3 mm needles
approximately 4 feet / 1.25 m yarn

BRACELET:
US size 6 / 4 mm needles
approximately 12 feet / 3.7 m double-strand yarn
(= 2 x 6 feet / 2 x 1.85 m)

Knit Picks Palette Fingering 100% wool, 2-ply (PIMENTO)

RING:
US size 1 / 2.25 mm needles
approximately 3 feet / 1 m yarn

BRACELET:
US size 3-4 / 3-4 mm needles
approximately 8-12 feet / 2.5-3 m double-strand yarn
(= 2 x 4-6 feet / 2 x 1.25-1.5 m)

Basic Instruction:

  • Cast on using the Longtail CO method.
  • Knit the ring’s heart “gemstone” with a single strand of yarn.
Knit the bracelet’s heart “gemstone” with a double-strand of yarn.
  • Leave approximately 6″ / 16 cms yarn tail lengths per ring for felting.
Leave approximately 10-12″ / 25-30 cms yarn tail lengths per bracelet for felting.
NOTE:  rings are knit single-strand, so you’ll need to attach an additional strand before felting the bands.
  • Weave ends from centre B&T toward side edges of the heart. This will stabilize the position of the heart “gemstone” and keep it from flopping around. Do this before splicing and felting the band.
  • Splice the tails before wetting and rubbing into felted bands. Watch in amazement, as all the yarn tail ends vanish… disappearing like magic! 🙂
For further felting info, check out my other posts featuring felted bands ‘n bits…

TIP:  wearing the item whilst rubbing/felting the band will help achieve the perfect fit. For “child-size” rings, try slipping the band around a similarly sized knitting needle or other object before felting.

As always, you are welcome to gift my copyrighted original designs to your heart’s content. But please contact me first, before making any effort to sell finished items from any of my copyrighted designs. It’s more fun being connected! And besides, I am very curious about you 🙂

Hope all this bling-a-ling-a-ring felts like fun for you! ♥ Jackie

    • Thank you Angela 🙂 It’s always lovely to hear from you. ❤ This week will be a frozen one for sure, so we’ll be keeping warm indoors! January turned out to be mostly way above normal temperatures, though… And the rock garden where my ring sets are pictured was covered with a couple feet of snow until 1-2 weeks ago!

  3. Love these ideas. That glove looks so cute!!! I like watching all the crazy hoopla for the game as people are so happy in their antics, but I really do not like watching the super bowl and wonder why all the hoopla. Football is just football to me and really doesn’t deserve all the money spent and nonsense that goes with it. As my daughter once said, think of all the research for disease, etc. all that money could be spent for in a much better way. Makes one think.

    • Thanks Carol 🙂 It was cold, but still fun to take pictures of my knitting props in the snow! American football certainly does generate a ton of money! Apparently, the Super Bowl commercials are running $4 million per 30-second spot. Whew… one of those would fund a whole lot of research! ❤

      • It sure would. Some of those athletes do turn a lot of money around to fund research and organizations to help a lot of people though and personally they do take the time to help some kids which is so good. Not all bad and what is probably is in the minority, but it still is A LOT of money that maybe could be managed in a little better way. We normally hear more about the few athletes who have gone bad, just like the teen entertainment celebrities. A wrong move and it is all over the press. It must be very hard to live their lives.

I really hadn’t thought of using outside props for my pictures for etsy. I have hesitated A LOT wondering how best to photograph them. Some people seem to have such a gift of doing that instead of just laying then on a sheet or something. I have to broaden my thinking about it in a more artistic way.

        • Well ‘guess my graphic design background helps with thinking creatively, but photography is much more difficult and time consuming than it looks. For every shot I’ve taken that turns out, there have been hundreds more that flopped. Lighting is key. ❤

          • My friend who is a photographer, not by profession, but could be for sure, says the same thing. I will keep that in mind so I don’t get discouraged. And now with no knitting for awhile as sort of injured my shoulder and not my back like I thought or a bit of both, maybe trying some photos would be a good idea. I have a lot of yarn ends to weave in on items and some to sew together, so maybe that will get done now.

Never a lack of things to do. Was shortening some pants today that have been waiting A LONG time to get done. I only have to cut off 4″. lol It is like shopping in my own closet. The person who gifted them to me over the years of holidays must have forgot that I wasn’t quite that tall. Whoops!!!!

            • Yup, always good to finish up stuff… I’ve got a basketful of unfinished stuff that I ought to get to too 😉 And now you’ll have 4″ of scrap fabric added to your stash! Thus the cycle of stash continues 😉 ❤

              • Yes, and stash is what frugal living is all about in these challenging economic times. It is far different from hoarding as shown on a popular reality tv show now. These pants actually were “clothes stash” until worn. Stash “is” a GOOD thing!!! lol So satisfying to search through stash and find what one needs without going to the store and having to buy it. All knitters, crafters, and sewers have stash. Just part of the life. LOL

                • lol … Yes, stash is good! Stash is not hoarding. Mine needs to get more organized, but it’s very satisfying to know it’s there 🙂 Here a stash, there a stash, everywhere a fibrous STASH 🙂 ❤

  4. Cute!!!!
I’ll be at our local pub who do a Super Bowl party. 6am doors open.
We’ve done this for the last 3 years, getting up early on Monday morning, drinking American beers and watching the superbowl.

      • Well that’s what time it starts here! Otherwise we have to dodge spoilers all day so we make the effort to watch it live. Once I’m off my knitting hiatus I definitely shall. Stupid old lady bones.

        • Dodging spoilers can get tricky, for sure. But it’ll be tons of fun to watch the game live with a crowd… even if it is at 6 AM! We’ll get that time difference thing here too—with the Sochi Olympics. Sorry to hear you hurt your shoulder 😦 My arm actually took a strange twist this past week and thought I’d be toast… Feels okay now. Hope you’re able to get back to knitting ‘n dyeing soon! ❤
